Mission at Home?
Jan 1 2007, 11:21 AM EST
I'm wondering why you found the urge to travel so far away to "discover" "poverty, injustice, and corruption" as well as "...children who are orphans or squatters living in poverty..." Did you consider looking a bit closer to home for your mission field? How about the streets, sewers, parks, and even shopping malls of any large city in the US? You need some hints? New York City, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Houston, Denver, Los Angeles... maybe even YOUR home town!!

first of all, i dont actually live in the US, but Im aware that this is not the main pint of your argument. I live in Australia, and you're right, there's plenty of injstice and corruption around, but not much in the way of poverty, admittedly. However, I think you're right. Helping people overseas is great but genorosity starts at home. And i have participated in local charities, and helping people in my hometown, such as visiting nursing homes, preparing christmas hampers for local poor kids, and other such acts. This year, I will be working on the streets of Sydney with homless people. So yes, I have considered the mission field closer to home. Maybe not as much as I should have, I am sometimes selfish. But im not immune to the suffering around me.
Having said all that, Im a big believer in helping wherever you can. I helped in Africa simply because I was blessed with the opportunity to go there. I felt God called me tp helping those particular people and to raising awareness for their plight now. Thanks for the reminder, and God bless, Genna 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Only choice, sometimes that choice is made by selfish parents and inflicted on their children. Civil libertarians and do gooders do not allow us to make any decisions about when bad parenting begins- only when it ends. This is usually destructive nad always harmful to the children. Children in Zim however, do not have the luxury of foster carer payments or child endowment. There is Absolutely no comparison between the helpless in Zim and the helpless here, except that it is all caused by selfishness. This girl chose to reach out in a country where she must have been aware of danger, disease and corruption. Why would anyone want to damage the good intent of this girl - I wonder what your issues truly are. If you feel led to give of yourself or your money, do so, wherever you feel the need. Don't put your poison on a young person who is intent only on helping in a positive way. She obviously has had an impact on those who were lucky enough to meet with her. How many have you help in your time here on earth? Genna if you read this, don't be discouraged by the ignorance, pettyness and jealousy of those who don't have your drive and inate desire to do good Lima 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
