"I'm wondering why you found the urge to travel so far away to "discover" "poverty, injustice, and corruption" as well as "...children who are orphans or squatters living in poverty..." Did you consider looking a bit closer to home for your mission field? How about the streets, sewers, parks, and even shopping malls of any large city in the US? You need some hints? New York City, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Houston, Denver, Los Angeles... maybe even YOUR home town!!"
first of all, i dont actually live in the US, but Im aware that this is not the main point of your argument. I live in Australia, and you're right, there's plenty of injstice and corruption around, but not much in the way of poverty, admittedly. However, I think you're right. Helping people overseas is great but genorosity starts at home. And i have participated in local charities, and helping people in my hometown, such as visiting nursing homes, preparing christmas hampers for local poor kids, and other such acts. This year, I will be working on the streets of Sydney with homless people. So yes, I have considered the mission field closer to home. Maybe not as much as I should have, I am sometimes selfish. But im not immune to the suffering around me. Having said all that, Im a big believer in helping wherever you can. I helped in Africa simply because I was blessed with the opportunity to go there. I felt God called me tp helping those particular people and to raising awareness for their plight now. Thanks for the reminder, and God bless, Genna 3 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

i appreciate your sentiments, but the poverty in zimbabwe is not comparable to the poverty anywhere in the us, or even in any city in australia (outback aboriginal areas excepted).
any poverty is eye opening, but i'm not sure you need to place one above the other. all people everywhere are equally important to god. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

You're right, its not comparable at all. and actually, while outback Aussie areas arnt as well off as cities, they are nowhere near as bad as Zimbabwe. (i.e. they are not starving). Yes, all people everwhere are equally important to God, but that's got little to do with it. Some people need more help then others, and the evil dictatorship in Zimbabwe is something that needs to be exposed and publisized. Im not placing the situation in ZImbabwe as more important than other terrible situations, but I dont thave the time to do a website on every terrrible situation i encounter. I feel called to this one, and Im not sure why you have a problem with that. I didnt go to Zimbabwe intending to further the cause of the people, but holding dying babies in my arms was enough to make it my cause. Im not big enough to tackle everything...........so I chose this.
